Le Pouldu Southern Brittany
a great place to unwind

Looking for caravan holiday accommodation in France? This site shares our photo memories of some caravan holidays in southern Brittany at Camping Quinquis just outside Le Pouldu where our daughter has her mobile homes.

Le Pouldu is a small port town in Southern Brittany at the mouth of the La Laita river. There are many beautiful beaches in easy reach of Camping du Quinquis.  The area is unspoiled with large tracts of forest.

Perhaps Le Pouldu is best known outside France for its association with the symbolist artist Paul Gauguin and other artists of the Pont Aven School.

There is a hypermarket is in Guidel and the larger towns of Lorient and Quimperle have several hypermarkets and other facilities.

Brittany Leisure Breaks is a small holiday business run by our daughter and son-in-law. Their web site has a family perspective, as they have young children, for which the site is well suited

However, we feel it is also ideal for the “unencumbered” couple who may simply want to relax in their own way surrounded by peace and beauty. You can enjoy good food and the pool complex, maybe walk a bit, or be much more energetic if that’s your thing.

What’s Southern Brittany Like?

There are many similarities to Cornwall  although this area is even quieter, less densely populated, cleaner and lacks the traffic jams. The roads are a dream!

Walkers have a wonderful range of breathtaking cliff paths, riverside walks, smugglers tracks and forest paths. For cyclists, of all energy levels, this area is a paradise!

If you are a beach lover there are sandy south facing beaches and secluded coves and rock pools bordering a crystal sea. Or you can enjoy fishing trips, sailing, surfing or jet skiing without travelling very far. There’s a riding stables ½km from the site, and more tennis courts near the beach.

For those interested in menhirs or megaliths, The small town of Carnac is not that far away. Carnac is world-famous for the long rows of megalithic standing stones stretching over a mile or so in a north-easterly direction to the north of the town.

Camping du Quinquis is run

run by an English family - ideal for us shy Franglais speakers!

Andrew and Carol Munro have worked tirelessly since taking over at Quinquis. Each year we have seen improvements to the site and its facilities.

Finding Camping du Quinquis

From the N165 near Lorient you will pass through the pretty town of Guidel on the way to Le Pouldu. The road will be signposted, but hey! Who doesn’t get confused?

After you leave Guidel you will pass over this bridge, the
Pont de St. Maurice, and admire the view across the Laita estuary, if it’s light. The photo shows the bridge from the riverside path.

About a mile after the bridge you will come to a crossroads where you turn left for Le Pouldu and Camping du Quinquis.

Count the minor crossroads signs - you turn right at the second. There is a sign for Camping Quinquis, but it’s easy to miss because of the much larger sign for “parc animalier”, the zoo at the end of the road, just beyond the camp site.

Travelling from Camping du Quinquis

As it is a no through road, you’ll always drive out the same way you came in.

Turn right at the end of the road and you will come to Le Pouldu. There is a boulangerie and small general store about half a mile from the camp road.

Just beyond the shop on the left is a road to Port Posmoric on the river. There’s nothing there but a car park, a seat and a landing stage.

The riverside footpath goes off to Pouldu Harbour to the right, and Pont de St. Maurice and the Abbey beyond to the left.

It’s a nice spot to sit and look, or simply be...

A Most Important Bridge!

Pont de St. Maurice

Getting Your Bearings

The Pont de St. Maurice is most important as a land mark. It marks the border between Finistere and Morbihan and is about half way between the crossroads for Le Pouldu and the first Guidel roundabout.

The Mairee at Clohars-Carnoet

The Mairee at Clohars-Carnoet, the next small town, is another useful landmark. Believe me, you can’t pass without noticing it! The crossroads for Le Pouldu lies in between these two landmarks.

There is a market here on Saturday, and a couple of boulangeries. You also turn down alongside the “Mairee” to go to Doelan.

Doelan

For all other destinations you should turn left at the end of the camp road:

Guidel

Keep on the road until the crossroads and turn right, continue over the bridge.

Guidel has a Shopi and a good Super-U hypermarket.  Market day is Sunday.

Lorient

Well signposted from Guidel. Several hypermarkets and other superstores.  It is the home of the summer  Celtic Festival attended by 500,000+ people from all over the world ~ Festival Interceltique de Lorient.

Gestel

Has a small Leclerc hypermarket. Leave Guidel on the road to Lorient, but cross the main road instead of turning on to it.

Pont-Scorff

Either go via Gestel, or take the Lorient route and turn off left through Queven.

Abbaye de St. Maurice (and creperie)

Turn right at the crossroads, then left into the park about half way to the bridge.

Quimperle

Go straight across the crossroads. This takes you through the forest and brings you out on the riverside in Quimperle. Alternatively you can go or return via Clohars-Carnoet.

Clohars-Carnoet

1) Turn left at the crossroads.

2) A prettier way is to take the first on the left after you leave the site. You will eventually come to a minor crossroads on the edge of Clohars-Carnoet. Go straight across and you will come out near the Shopi. (Note: this end of the route is one way. To return by this route you take the second turning after the Shopi and turn right at the little crossroads. If you miss it, no problem: you’ll just return to Quinquis from the “Ar Men” roundabout at Le Pouldu. Photo on Le Pouldu page.)

Doelan

Turn left at the crossroads, turn left in Clohars-Carnoet between the Mairee (town hall) and the Church.

You can also go to Doelan from the coast road at Le Pouldu.

Moelan-sur-Mer

Turn left at the crossroads, pass through Clohars-Carnoet. This is also the route to

Pont-Aven, Concarneau and Quimper.

Alternatively, for a scenic drive, go via Doelan. (But not if you’re in a hurry!)

The rest of this page will help you find your way around by car.

Even if you stay elsewhere, it should be helpful.
