Carnac in Southern Brittany is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world and was a prehistoric capital.

The famous megalithic standing stones (Menhirs), which number over 3000, were erected over 4000 years ago.

The Carnac standing stones are an incredible sight. No photo can do them justice. You photograph one area, and then find a larger field just round the corner ... and again ... And again.

The extent is both awesome and bewildering as to the purpose of the stones. There are no stone circles and little order is apparent. One thought that has to come to mind is a comparison to those endless rows of headstones in war grave cemeteries.

On the other hand, it would also have given Carnac an excellent defence against cavalry attack from that direction.

The town of Carnac is well worth visiting.

We got so caught up with the standing stones that we forgot to take any photos of Carnac around the town. It is quite an attractive town, and a logical inclusion is the museum of prehistory.

Carnac is situated near the head of the Quiberon Peninsula. The location means that it is easy to include Carnac in a day trip to Vannes or Quiberon, or possibly both, if you make an early start.
