Lorient Southern Brittany  -  Home of the Festival Interceltique (Celtic Festival)

Lorient Southern Brittany  is an important town and home of the famous Celtic Festivay: Festival Interceltique de Lorient

The name Lorient originated with the India Company  trading from here with India and China. The town now has five ports including a military port with a submarine base.

As with most large ports Lorient is also an industrial town. It can appear one vast sprawl of offices, factories and warehouses, but some consideration has been given to landscaping.

The town can come as a bit of a shock when you hit it in the middle of a restful holiday as it bustles with life and activity. However, even here you can turn a corner and find a quiet stretch of beach or a park.

Lorient is now a University Town

The University of Southern Brittany was founded in 1995 and has sites in Vannes and Lorient. It is the most recently created University in France and is involved in research as well as the economic development of the region.

The presence of the University lifts Lorient’s 62,000 population by about  10,000.  As a result Lorient has an increasing amount of social and leisure facilities.  There are also plenty of hypermarkets and superstores of all descriptions.

The Celtic Festival - Festival Interceltique de Lorient

The annual Celtic Festival - Festival Interceltique de Lorient draws over 500,000 visitors from around the world.

Lorient is quite a large town by French standards, but the Festival brings about an 8-fold increase  around the end of July and early August every year!

This is a celebration of celtic culture and heritage, and, of course, music and dance. Acts come from around the world to participate.  The traditional dress in the street parades is a sight worth seeing.

The official web site is here, but at present the English version seems to have vanished.
