Quiberon and Port Maria lie at the southern tip of the Quiberon Peninsula, joined to the mainland by a narrow sandy causeway about 10 miles (16km) long.  Quiberon is primarily a seaside resort for the French during summer, although it attracts some foreign visitors.

Quiberon has beautiful beaches on the sheltered eastern side. The best beach being the Grande Plage (Great Beach) on the protected side of the peninsula.

The Côte Sauvage lies on the western side. It is a wild and rugged mix of coves, and rocky outcroppings lashed by the Atlantic Ocean, hence the name: Côte Sauvage.

The Quiberon Penisula is popular for all types of surfing. You’ll see body surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing. Equipment and tuition is available at a variety of centres. Some of the best surf in Brittany is found along the rugged coastline of the Côte Sauvage, with big Atlantic rollers sweeping in from the west.

Port Maria is one place to eat. Many wander around port Maria in the evening looking for a restaurant. The many seafood restaurants compete for the attention of passers by.

From the harbour of Port-Maria you can go out on pleasure boats, or take the ferry for nearby Belle-Ile.

The Restaurante Panoramique at Port Blanc.

Very few foreign visitors venture frar from Quiberon and Port Maria except for a drive along the Côte Sauvage.

However, if you take that drive as far as the picturesque harbour of Port Blanc you will find a seafood restaurant that surpasses anything Port Maria can offer for quality or ambience.

The first floor restaurant is pictured between two the two harbour photos, which I hope will give you some idea of the panoramic view.

You may watch the most beautiful sunsets as you dine!

As is often the case, excellent seafood is reasonably priced here.  It is well worth the effort.

Quiberon - origin of Carnac?

On the western side at the very tip of Quiberon we stumbled on an enigma!

Miniature stone circles and various standing stone arrangements stretching for hundreds of metres along the beach.

Could it be that they creep out of the sea here and migrate north to Carnac growing over the centuries?

It struck us that this beach art must have been created by many people over a number of weeks. To the credit of the French people they had been left intact for everyone to enjoy.

Sadly, we acknowledged that this would never happen in Britain.
