Did you know?

Quimper in Southern Brittany is the oldest city in Brittany.

Quimper was capital of the ancient diocese, kingdom and later duchy of Cornouaille. According to legend, some time between the fourth and seventh centuries, the first bishop of Quimper, St. Corentin crossed the Channel from Cornwall with the first Bretons to the place they called “Little Britain”.

Quimper is dominated by the fine Gothic Cathedral of St. Corentin dating from the 13th century.

Built from the local had granite, this massive cathedral is has decorative features which are testimony to the prodigious skills of the medieval stonemasons.

Quimper's name derives from "kempert", which means the junction  two rivers, the Steir and the Odet.  The cobbled streets of the medieval quarter are now a pedestrianized area.

The Odet curves from east to southwest and is spanned by several low, flat bridges. In autumn these are decked with chrysanthemums and geraniums.

You can stroll along the boulevards on both banks of the river, where ancient and modern architecture blend together without clashing too much.

Quimper hosts the annual "Fete de la Cornouaille". This is the biggest celebration of the traditional culture of Brittany. Concerts, street parades in traditional clothing and street musicians abound. This takes place in the second half of July.
