Our travel check list may help you make those essential preparations that should ensure a trouble free holiday, or see you through any problems that arise as easily as possible.

To stay safe and secure abroad, and to be prepared in case things go wrong, it is important to take a few simple precautions before you go and while you are there. Usually nothing goes wrong, but neglecting some small but important piece of advance preparation can ruin a holiday.

The travellers checklist below may seem ridiculously obvious in parts, but we have tried to list everything you need to prepare for your safety and security before travelling abroad.

Please Note: This travel check list relates to planning for a self catering caravan holiday in France. Most of it will be relevant wherever you travel abroad, however, particularly outside Europe there may be other considerations. We would recommend you use the FCO Travel Checklist.

Travel Checklist 1 - If You Want These Things, Take Them With You!

Bedding

You only need to take duvet covers, sheets and pillow cases, all the rest is in the caravan.

Clothes

You may get away with a couple of pairs of shorts and a couple of tops, but don’t count

on it! Takee something warm, something waterproof and some waterproof footwear.

DVDs/CDs/Books

There are portable TV/DVD combos in the mobile homes, but you won’t get TV reception. If you’re staying in at night you’ll probably want a few films, some music or something to read.

Torches

You need at least as many as there

are parties in your group that might

go out separately in the evening.

Foods

Soda Water

Baked Beans

Bacon

Cheddar Cheese

Sunscreen

You can buy it in France, but you may need it on the ferry, or driving to Quinquis. No point in spoiling the rest of the holiday by forgetting this.

Use a higher protection factor than you would at home.

Maps

You might be better off buying your main maps before you go.

Maps of the local area are available from the

Le Pouldu Tourist information Centre.

Travel Checklist 2 - Documentation

Passports

Make sure they are valid beyond your return date, and Make sure you HAVE them with you!

Tickets

Check they are correct, and - make sure you HAVE them before you start your journeys!

Health

Make sure you have a valid free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC replaces E111 form)

If you need extra health insurance ensure you have a valid certificate with you.

Travel Insurance

Make sure you have all the necessary claims details and numbers with you.

Car Insurance

Make sure you have your Certificate of Insurance with you.

You also should take you vehicle registration document.

Make sure you have your Certificate for breakdown/recovery Insurance with you.

Driver’s Licence

Make sure you take it with you.

Credit Card Insurance and details

Make sure you have all the numbers you need written down.

TAKE DUPLICATES

It is advisable to take one, preferably two, sets of photocopies of all important documents with you as well as the originals, and store them in two separate locations.

Travel Checklist 3 - Health Matters

Apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC replaces E111 form from Post Offices)

Many insurers insist on this being used before you can make a claim on your travel insurance.

Check Health insurance requirements.

If prescribed, check you have enough medication to last well beyond your return.

If prescribed, check you have enough medication packed for your holiday.

If you feel you have a health problem, get it sorted before you go!

Travel Checklist 4 - Money Matters

Bank/Credit/Debit cards - make sure they are valid beyond your return date

Make sure you have valid credit card insurance.

Remember to get the Euros you need (try a local pawnbroker for a good price!)

It will cost you dear if you draw Euros through a cash machine in France

Travel Checklist 5 - Motoring Matters

Recent Service or at least a professional check over.

Check Tyres tread and pressure including the spare.

Maps - even if you have a SatNav system

(For SatNav make sure you have all the necessary destination details you can think of to make it easy!)

Check Car Insurance validity and Inform Insurers of your dates abroad.

(Check - many UK insurers only cover the minimum legally required even if you have full comp in the UK)

Take Insurance Certificate with you

Check Accident/Recovery cover

Be aware of speed limits, road priorities & signs, and other safety/legal issues.

Brittany Ferries travel checklist recommends you carry the following items of emergency  equipment to ensure you comply with European Motoring Requirements

Headlamp Beam Adaptors

Failure to adapt your headlamps at any time, day or night, will render your vehicle unfit for use on the road and could invalidate your motor insurance.

GB Plate

A GB plate must be displayed on the rear of your vehicle, caravan or trailer.

Warning Triangle

Drivers must be able to give advance warning of a hazard on the road. Hazard warning lights alone are NOT always sufficient - (2 triangles required for Spain).

Spare Bulbs

Drivers must be in a position to replace any blown exterior light.

First Aid Kit & Fire Extinguisher

The European Good Samaritan Law requires every driver to stop and provide assistance in the event of an accident.

Reflective Vest

Motoring law in an increasing number of European Countries now requires all vehicles to carry reflective vests, for drivers AND passengers, for use in the event of breakdowns or emergencies.

Travel Checklist 6 - Insurance Matters

For All Necessary Insurances:

Check you have cover

Check you have sufficient cover

Check you have the documents with you and all adults know where to find them.

Travel Checklist 6 - Communications Matters

Mobile phone - check credit, validity, and whether you can arrange to make your calls cheaper!

Contact Numbers

Make sure you have:

Copies of important documents.

Account/Reference numbers of passports, bank cards and anything else you can't afford to lose.

Phone numbers if you need to cancel or renew credit cards etc.

Phone numbers of home GP, employer, ferry company etc.

HAVE at least two sets of these - one with another member of your party if possible - just in case.

And make sure someone in the UK knows:-

a) exactly where you are going and when you are due back, and,

b) if possible has a contact number for where you are staying other than your mobile.

Travel Checklist 6 - Finally the Ferry - the Ferry Home that is!

You need their customer service number, and, unless you are fluent in French,  it is worth the cost of calling the UK number. Brittany Ferries staff are all bilingual, but it can lose something on the ‘phone.

It is very important that you telephone the afternoon before you are due to to return home to check that your sailing has not been changed.  The last thing you want is to arrive at St. Malo and find your sailing has been switched to Cherbourg - and you can still make it .... Just!

You may think this unlikely.  I may be an exception, but so far it has happened 30% of the time and not just due to bad weather.

Do leave yourself plenty of time for your journey to the port.  If a puncture means you miss the ferry, that’s a costly delay. You can always spend an hour over coffee or in a hypermarket near the Port.
