To stay safe and secure abroad, and to be prepared in case things go wrong, it is important to take a few simple precautions before you go and while you are there. Usually nothing goes wrong, but neglecting some small but important piece of advance preparation can ruin a holiday.
The travellers checklist below may seem ridiculously obvious in parts, but we have tried to list everything you need to prepare for your safety and security before travelling abroad.
Please Note: This travel check list relates to planning for a self catering caravan holiday in France. Most of it will be relevant wherever you travel abroad, however, particularly outside Europe there may be other considerations. We would recommend you use the FCO Travel Checklist.
Travel Checklist 1 -
Bedding
You only need to take duvet covers, sheets and pillow cases, all the rest is in the caravan.
Clothes
You may get away with a couple of pairs of shorts and a couple of tops, but don’t count
on it! Takee something warm, something waterproof and some waterproof footwear.
DVDs/CDs/Books
There are portable TV/DVD combos in the mobile homes, but you won’t get TV reception. If you’re staying in at night you’ll probably want a few films, some music or something to read.
Torches
You need at least as many as there
are parties in your group that might
go out separately in the evening.
Soda Water
Baked Beans
Bacon
Cheddar Cheese
Sunscreen
You can buy it in France, but you may need it on the ferry, or driving to Quinquis. No point in spoiling the rest of the holiday by forgetting this.
Use a higher protection factor than you would at home.
Maps
You might be better off buying your main maps before you go.
Maps of the local area are available from the
Le Pouldu Tourist information Centre.

Apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC replaces E111 form from Post Offices)
Many insurers insist on this being used before you can make a claim on your travel insurance.
Check Health insurance requirements.

If prescribed, check you have enough medication packed for your holiday.
If you feel you have a health problem, get it sorted before you go!
Bank/Credit/Debit cards -

Check you have sufficient cover

Contact Numbers
Make sure you have:
Copies of important documents.
Account/Reference numbers of passports, bank cards and anything else you can't afford to lose.
Phone numbers if you need to cancel or renew credit cards etc.
Phone numbers of home GP, employer, ferry company etc.
HAVE at least two sets of these -
And make sure someone in the UK knows:-
a) exactly where you are going and when you are due back, and,
b) if possible has a contact number for where you are staying other than your mobile.
You need their customer service number, and, unless you are fluent in French, it is worth the cost of calling the UK number. Brittany Ferries staff are all bilingual, but it can lose something on the ‘phone.
It is very important that you telephone the afternoon before you are due to to return
home to check that your sailing has not been changed. The last thing you want is
to arrive at St. Malo and find your sailing has been switched to Cherbourg -
You may think this unlikely. I may be an exception, but so far it has happened 30% of the time and not just due to bad weather.
Do leave yourself plenty of time for your journey to the port. If a puncture means you miss the ferry, that’s a costly delay. You can always spend an hour over coffee or in a hypermarket near the Port.
